Credited as the inventors of sailboats, Mesopotamians began using boats with sails thousands of years ago. They've since been credited as the inventors of sailboats. Because Mesopotamia was situated between two rivers, Mesopotamians needed water transportation for travel and trade. Their sailboats were simple in design: square sails made of cloth. The angle and direction of the sails could not be changed, so they were entirely dependent on the direction of the wind! The hull or the body of the boat was made of shaped wood planks. Though they couldn't handle lots of cargo or people, the Mesopotamia's sailboats did better than many other sailing vessels of that time. The design work Mesopotamians did on their sailboats provided the foundation for all future sailboats.
