Whenever one of our team got their hands on this artfully crafted and fully-functional Brass Tapered Telescope, we were bound to hear a hearty "Thar she blows!" or "Land ho!", but when the grown-up in each of us regained control, we were amazed by the beauty of this classic instrument.
Made of brass and stitched red leather the tapered telescope is 2" in diameter and roughly 6½" when collapsed, but extends to a full 17" when its three cylindrical sections are deployed. Keep your brass telescope, or "spyglass", safely stored in its sheesham wood box.
This example is a refracting telescope, using glass lenses to form a magnified image of distant objects, not unlike a camera lens. Telescopes originated in the 17th century, believed to be invented by a Dutch optician, and while they were popular with seafarers, it is thought that Galileo was actually the first to turn his lens on the heavens. A surefire conversation starter, we think this brass tapered telescope is heavenly in its own right.
