Inspired by glass fishing net floats, our set of three Recycled Glass Balls with Abacá Rope have the appearance of "found object" art. Each set of three glass balls includes two that are wrapped in traditional abacá rope, also known as Manila Hemp. Displayed together or scattered around your home, these handblown glass balls add a definite nautical flair to your décor.

The use of handblown glass balls to support fishing nets dates back to 1840, when Norwegian fishermen used them to support large groups  of fishing nets strung together in groups up to 50 miles in length. By the early 1900s, the use of glass floats became popular in Japan, and, thanks to the enormity of that nation's fishing enterprise, original examples are still found washing up on shores around the world.

Our glass fishing floats are created by Philippine craftsmen from recycled glass in the same way glassblowers made floats years ago. The natural Manila Hemp rope is woven from fiber harvested from the abacá tree, a variety of banana, just as it has been by Philippine craftsmen for centuries. Very durable, flexible and resistant to salt water damage, abacá rope was a natural choice for use in ship's lines and fishing nets. Wind & Weather Exclusive Design.
