This New York Times World War II Coin and Stamp Set commemorates V-E Day: May 8, 1945, the end of the war in Europe. The three coins are U.S. 1943 Lincoln steel pennies, one each from the three mints that produced them: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. Minted in zinc-coated steel due to wartime needs for copper, the 1943 pennies created a variety of problems. When they were first issued, they were often mistaken for dimes, and, since the galvanizing process did not coat they edges, they were prone to rusting.
