    Overview

This New York Times World War II Coin and Stamp Set commemorates V-E Day: May 8, 1945, the end of the war in Europe. The three coins are U.S. 1943 Lincoln steel pennies, one each from the three mints that produced them: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The set also includes six U.S. postage stamps including stamps honoring General Douglas MacArthur and General George S. Patton. The set is contained within a handsome portfolio featuring an official reproduction of The New York Times front page that ran on that memorable day. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.

Minted in zinc-coated steel due to wartime needs for copper, the 1943 pennies created a variety of problems. When they were first issued, they were often mistaken for dimes, and, since the galvanizing process did not coat they edges, they were prone to rusting. The only regular-issue U.S. coins that can be picked up with a magnet, they are now sought-after collectors items.
