This remarkably beautiful Butterfly and Iris on Manzanita Base is an original Bovano design, hand enameled in the Cheshire, Connecticut studio. Vitreous enamel is applied by hand using a delicate sprinkling method layered over solid copper and then kiln fired.
It all starts with a single sheet of copper. From this sheet, a variety of shapes are cut. The shapes are then forged and shaped to add dimension. A frame is made which is used to both support and arrange the sculpture. In a delicate process, our highly skilled enamelers powder coat each sculpture with powdered glass, adding layer upon layer of beautiful color. The placement of the individual grains of powdered glass adds to the uniqueness of each piece we create. Once the sculptures have been dusted with the powdered glass, they are carefully transferred to the kiln which heats the sculpture to an overwhelming 1600 degrees, fusing the glass to the copper and enhancing the brilliancy of the colors. Several firings may be necessary to complete each piece. Finally, the sculptures are affixed to the frame completing the sculptural arrangement.
The manzanita base is the root of a woody chaparral plant indigenous to California mountains. The unique color and unusual shape is an ideal medium for sculptural display.
