This elegant Colonial Williamsburg Armillary Sphere features a rich, hand-applied verdigris finish and is inspired by the design of a formal European model in Colonial Williamsburg's antique collection. This particular armillary sphere's structure functions as a sundial and uses aluminum, cast iron and brass to create an eye-catching display. A unique gift for any history buff, gardener or explorer, this weather-durable armillary sundial will be a conversation-starting focal point in any lawn or garden. Can mount to a post or sit on a flat surface. Hardware not included.
Originally an 18th century colonial scientific tool, the armillary device was designed to teach spherical astronomy. It served as a model of celestial objects in the sky, consisting of a spherical framework of rings, centered around the Earth that represented the lines of celestial longitude, latitude and other astronomically important features. By the end of the century it became more decorative in nature.
