The phrase "terra cotta" is Italian (derived from Latin) and translates as "baked earth." The term is also often used to describe the brownish orange color typical of this kind of earthenware. Until the introduction of stoneware in the 14th century, terra cotta was the only known type of ceramic produced by Western and pre-Columbian peoples. The natural clay is formed by artists and then fired to temperatures approaching 2,000°F.
