The finish appears to be reddish paint rather than antiqued copper but is nonetheless attractive. I would call it a "novelty" item which should look pretty against the snow (when it comes!)and should probably do an OK job of measuring the depth.
Comments about Product: This is the third gauge I have bought (two for family and one for us). Not only does it tell us how much snow we have had, but it's a beautiful piece of lawn art. I won't blame the large amount of snow we had this weekend on the gauge. But now we know how much we got.
