Standing Dichroic Glass Tiger is handmade in the USA by artisan Karen Pester, and accented with 14k gold. By mixing old world glass-making techniques with modern technology and science, these glass creations have a distinct look and creative flavor not found anywhere else. Karen is one of very few artists that are manipulating glass in the kiln to make the animals stand.
The term "dichroic" comes from the Greek 'di' meaning two and 'chroic' meaning color. Dichroic glass is glass containing multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides which give the glass dichroic optical properties. The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a particular transmitted color and a completely different reflected color, as certain wavelengths of light either pass through or are reflected. The colors shift depending on the angle of view. Dichroic glass is an example of thin-film optics.
