Description
How this storm glass really works remains a mystery, but it is believed that electromagnetic changes in weather patterns activate the crystals inside; sealed-glass chamber fills with crystals when air pressure decreases. Framed in lacquered polished-brass case; can stand or wall mount. Wood Mounting Plaque has etched-brass plate that explains storm-glass dynamics. Predictions are usually 1-2 days in advance. The instrument is named after famed meteorologist Admiral Fitzroy, who used a storm glass on his historic 1831 voyage with Charles Darwin aboard the HMS Beagle.

Comments about Product:The storm glass piece was easy to install. We wall mounted it and it looks nice with our barometer and thermometer. We've not yet experienced a storm so we haven't been able to see it in action but are anxious to watch as winter approaches.

Comments about Product:I use this product for determining the forecast of the day of week. It;s great to have it in a good visable place. I like have the explanations right on the plaque so I can read them. Wish I didn't have to use my glasses to read the forecast.

Didn't work!
Comments about Product:We thought we'd found the perfect birthday gift for our avid sailing father/father-in-law who resides by the Chesapeake Bay. Especially since his dwelling is in a high rise - he could check conditions by this attractive instrument before venturing out to the marina! Perhaps that's the reason for its failure to function - the elevation. None of the information or reviews revealed this potential drawback however. The weather went through several changes; the instrument, none. So, disappointedly, it had to be returned.

Comments about Product:The young Darwin seems to have been genuinely surprised by FitzRoy's invitation to publish his journal as part of the official narrative of the Beagle's five-year circumnavigation… leading to the opening of his first notebook on "Transmutation of Species" in 1837.

Better than the weather man
Comments about Product:Our storm glass sits where it is noticeable from several areas in our great room. We check it frequently, it is great fun to see what's happening. Not only has it been highly accurate, but we've found it to be more reliable than the weather men on our local TV channels. That was especially true this past winter. This weather instrument is a lovely little accent piece and is so attractive that conversations have been built around it. Our guests are usually quite curious as to what it is and how it works. I wouldn't hesitate to give this as a gift.
